Discover when Florida’s hurricane season peaks, 2025 storm predictions, and how to protect your home and insurance.

When Is Hurricane Season in Florida and How Bad Are the Predictions for 2025?

If you’re a Florida homeowner, hurricane season isn’t just a date on the calendar—it’s a stressful and often traumatic time of year, especially after the back-to-back hits from Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Many residents are still recovering emotionally and financially, and now, 2025 is shaping up to be another highly active season. With above-average storm predictions and major hurricanes expected to make landfall during peak months, it’s more important than ever to stay informed, prepared, and proactive.

Let’s dive into what this year’s season could look like, when you need to be most alert, and how to safeguard your home and peace of mind.

When Is Hurricane Season in Florida?

Hurricane season in Florida officially begins June 1 and runs through November 30, though the most dangerous and active months tend to fall between mid-August and late October.

Key Things to Know:

  • Peak Season: Mid-August to late September is historically the most active period.

  • Warm Waters Fuel Storms: The warmer the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, the greater the chance for stronger storms.

  • Storms Can Form Early or Late: Although rare, storms have developed outside the official season, so it’s never too early to prepare.

Whether you’re a lifelong Floridian or a new homeowner, knowing the timing helps you plan ahead—and avoid panic once a storm is already on the radar.

2025 Hurricane Season Predictions

According to Colorado State University’s Department of Atmospheric Science, the 2025 hurricane season is projected to be “well above average.”

As of their April 2025 forecast:

“We anticipate 23 named storms, 11 hurricanes, and 5 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher).”
Colorado State University Forecast, April 2025

This prediction is fueled by:

  • Warmer-than-average Atlantic sea surface temperatures

  • A transition to La Niña conditions, which reduce wind shear and allow storms to strengthen

  • A continuation of the active cycle in Atlantic hurricane activity that began in 1995

If these forecasts hold true, we could experience multiple strong hurricanes that could threaten Florida’s Gulf Coast—especially vulnerable areas like Pinellas County. With the devastation from Helene and Milton still fresh, residents are understandably wary of what this season could bring.

How to Prepare for Hurricane Season in 2025

Whether the storms reach your neighborhood or not, the best way to reduce risk is through preparation.

Prepare Your Home:

  • Trim trees and clear gutters before June

  • Install hurricane shutters or impact-resistant windows

  • Inspect your roof and secure loose shingles

  • Seal any vulnerable entry points (garage doors, lanai enclosures, etc.)

  • Document your home’s condition with photos and videos in case of insurance claims

Prepare Yourself:

  • Stock up on essentials like water, nonperishables, batteries, medications, and pet supplies

  • Create an evacuation plan and know your local shelters

  • Keep fuel tanks at least half full during peak months

Check Your Insurance:

  • Confirm your homeowners and flood insurance policies are current and comprehensive

  • Review windstorm coverage—many policies in Florida require separate endorsements

  • Don’t forget vehicle coverage—make sure your car insurance includes storm damage

If you’re unsure about your policy or what it covers, reach out to your insurance agent before a storm is named.
